  12. SUBJECT: MGT - The need to inform government officials
  13.      At  a  statewide  meeting of  communications  volunteers  in
  14. government  service  it was evident that  some  local  government
  15. officials  had no idea what Amateur Radio or  CAP  Communications
  16. might be able to do for them.
  17.      At  the  suggestion of the state disaster agency,  the  most
  18. interested  Amateur Radio operator contacted the sheriff  of  his
  19. sparsely  populated  and remote county.  The  ham  explained  his
  20. capability  to  contact  the  state  capitol  218  airline  miles
  21. distant. What if the county seat lost its long distance telephone
  22. connnectivity?  This was an example discussed with  the  sheriff.
  23. Less  than  two  weeks later it actually happened.  The  ham  was
  24. called  upon  by the sheriff to make contact  with  "the  outside
  25. world" and let them know of the predicament. That meeting between
  26. the ham and the official was timely and productive.
  27.      That particular state has rural counties with low population
  28. and few hams. This situation lent itself to the state  organizing
  29. them  into  the State RACES instead of  individual  county  RACES
  30. units.
  31.      It  was  noted at their statewide meeting that  it  is  very
  32. important  NOT  to  use "ham  speak"  when  educating  government
  33. officials  and  the public. For example they may  understand  the
  34. word  "repeater", but technical jargon like "two meters" they  do
  35. not. Even words like "amateur", "ham", "RACES", "ARES", and other
  36. acronyms  are meaningless.  Avoid jargon.  I know it's  hard  ---
  37. but it can be important.
